Also worth noting, it is technically possible to install a previous version of OS X than what shipped with your Mac. I ended up having to hold the fn key along with the right-side Option key on every selection to finally get this to work. I got the message about a newer version being already installed preinstall is 11Aa , then an error about insufficient funds. I put in a credit card number, and it let me start the download.
